Pets of the Week | June 13

Good news, Remington the Border collie mix was adopted. Tea the redbone coonhound mix is still hopeful and batty her pretty brown eyes at everyone that passes her kennel. If you are looking for two dogs then her twin sister Smores is across the kennel isle from her with the same sweet hopeful eyes.

This week first we have a very handsome dog looking for an active parent with a forever home. Our second dog is a very friendly boy looking for a forever lap and a loving home.

Paul (ID# A 1686266) is a 2 year old, male black & brindle German Shepherd mix. He is a tall lanky boy weighing 72 pounds. Paul is looking for an active home and would love to be your jogging or hiking partner. He came to us a stray. Paul is one of our potty brigade dogs so house training should be a bit easier for him once he learns his new routine. He loves to take walks and is pretty good on leash after his initial excitement of getting out but he can be strong if he wants to go in a different direction. Paul, like most young dogs would benefit from a training class. Each of our adoptions comes with a free training class. Paul is very attentive to his person and someone worked with him in his previous home. He already knows the cues for “sit” and “down”. Paul also learned to sit up and do a “high five” putting both paws on the palm of your hand.  This is so cute and he is very proud after he shows it this trick. He is quickly catching on to “come” and learning to “wait” at doors. Paul may not have been around other dogs prior to coming to the shelter and can be particular with his dog friends. If you have another dog we are always happy to help you with a meet and greet between the two or three if needed. Paul is such a smart good looking people loving boy he just may be the only best friend you will need or want. Paul is presently in our first building at the Eastside location. Since he is a larger dog he is in a larger kennel. His neighbor is a bit on the rowdy noisy side so ask to meet Paul out of the kennel to get a true picture of how this boy will be in your home. Paul should do well left indoors but due to his height a home with tall walls will be needed if he is ever in the back yard unattended. He could walk over or stand and look over the height of most walls.

Bailey (ID# A 1689863) is a 1 year & 8 month old, male white & tan Smooth coated Chihuahua and Beagle mix. He weighs 12 pounds. He has the cutest little under bite. Bailey came in with another dog when his owner could no longer take care of them. When he and his brother Brody came to the shelter they were a bit shy and probably in shock with the loss of home and their person.   When Brody was adopted we wondered how Bailey would do on his own but Bailey is doing just fine. He is quite popular with the volunteers and staff. He frequently attends little dog play group. This outgoing friendly boy has lots of fun. He enjoys taking walks and is good on leash. Bailey would be a perfect daily walking partner for you. He also enjoys lap time with petting and he will sneak in a quick kiss. Bailey is a gentle soul with people. Children need help from their parents to learn how to treat and handle small dogs. Frequently we suggest small dogs are best in homes with children a bit older around 12 years of age. Bailey would do well in a mature home and would love to share retirement with you. Bailey is ready for his turn to find happiness in a loving home. You will find him at our Eastside shelter in building A.

If you prefer your feline companion to be an adult please remember June is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat month

In honor of Adopt-a-Cat Month, the Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department is offering a special adoption promotion to encourage the public to adopt shelter cats.

Starting Thursday, June 4, and continuing through Tuesday, June 30, you can adopt a cat one year or older for just $10. You’ll find a wide variety of adult cats to fit many lifestyles and personalities, in all colors, shapes and sizes.

If you adopt a new feline friend, keep in mind you’re doing your part to deal with cat overpopulation. Giving a sheltered cat a starring role in your life, you will gain a faithful companion, a friendship will be formed, and a life may be saved.

All cats from the shelter are spayed and neutered. A cat adopted from Animal Welfare also comes with a microchip, the first round of vaccinations, and a free first visit to a veterinarian.
