Republican State Senator Ron Griggs is proposing a reinstatement of a tax on food and medical services. It’s part of Senate Bill 343. Griggs explains why the extra revenue will be needed by communities in the state.
The hold harmless payments were put in place when the food and medical taxes were abolished, as a way to compensate municipalities for the lost revenue. Griggs says New Mexico simply can’t afford to keep making those payments. His food tax could be 3.75% and 2% on medical services.
