This week, the University of Oklahoma dropped the hammer on a Fraternity that was videotaped on a bus delivering a racist chant. The students won’t be expelled but the Frat is done for four years. Was it vile and in poor taste? Of course, but Millennials have an excuse. They have been desensitized to such language. All of their lives the top 40 chart, rap and hip hop has flaunted those words carelessly and without fear. And the trickle-down effect is we can use these words too. Rapper Waka Flocka has even cancelled a concert at the college because he was so outraged. Meanwhile, Flocka’s songs are littered with the N-word and misogyny, even though he built his career on capitalizing on the themes he now dispels. It’s OK for him to use it, just no one else. Words only empower when you let them, and right now we are letting the words empower.
