SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) A Santa Fe man who says he shot his brother in self-defense will spend about nine months behind bars. Forty-three-year-old Felix Martinez, who has been under electronic monitoring for the past 15 months, was sentenced Thursday on guilty pleas to involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence charges.
Martinez shot his older brother, David Martinez, in the chest in March 2012 during an argument. He then wrapped the body in plastic and dumped it and the gun in a cactus patch along the Santa Fe river.
Police later determined the gun was the same one that had killed Santa Fe artist Ethan Boyer a month earlier. Police have said they believe David Martinez killed Boyer when the victim interrupted a burglary at his home.
Relatives testified they were afraid of David Martinez.
