Pets of the Week | Nov 28

Perhaps you will be off over the upcoming holidays. If you have been considering a new companion and will have some extra time off this can be a great time to help your new companion bond with you and its home as well as work on house training, leash training and get some exercise. Just remember if you are having company/family visiting it can be a time that pets are easily lost. Everyone is having fun during visits and parties. Guests don’t always know to keep doors and gates closed. It can be very stressful for pets when the house is so busy and crowded. This can also be a time where your beloved pets get sick eating chocolate, poinsettias and many other holiday traditions that can be harmful to pets, not to mention it is way too cold to leave them outside.

Lovely lab Lady and spunky little Dilbert are still hopeful for a home before the holidays so hurry on down to meet them.

Julie (ID# A 1725984) is a 2 year old, female tan & white Australian Shepherd mix.  This lovely gal with a great name weighs 48 pounds. She has a very pretty and soft coat. Yes, her breed is usually quite energetic and enthusiastic needing lots of attention and exercise. The Julie we know is quite gentle and easy. She will be a great walking partner and is great on leash. She loves attention and she is a leaner, leaning in to give you a kiss or encourage some petting and affection. She does enjoy a run around the yard and playing with her person. She herds her people just a bit. This girl is very talented already knowing the cue for sit, down, she shakes paw politely and also rolls over!  She could be your next hiking or jogging partner. With some time for conditioning this beauty could be a great exercise partner. She came to us a bit shy and occasionally her shier side comes out so take her to a quiet area to meet her. She would be a nice companion for a retired couple and equally good with a family having children over 10. It seems she never had experiences with other dogs. She’s attended play group and was unsure never responding to play encouragement from the other dogs. Even when the dogs were gentle she tended to stay with the humans rather than play. You do not always need more than one companion.  Lovely Julie may be your perfect match. Julie does enjoy play with people and may herd you just a little.  Julie is ready for her forever home and you will find her in building A at our Eastside shelter.

Chewy (ID# A 1700886) is a 7 year old, male tan & white smooth coated Chihuahua mix. He weighs 10 pounds. Chewy is a gentle lap dog. He is a bit on the shy side like many little ones. Everything is larger than they are so they can be startled by things we take for granted. Chewy enjoys taking a walk and is a very good boy on leash. He has participated in small dog play groups. Our play group leaders say he loves to run and play, he loves the other dogs. So if you have another little one needing a play mate you might consider bringing him/her in to meet Chewy. We did find Chewy has a heart murmur. It does not hinder his activity and our vet staff said at this time no treatment is needed. Perhaps when he is much older he may. Chewy’s favorite reward after a walk or play is “lap time” where he can shower you with kisses. Sometimes these little guys get passed by when they are kenneled with others. It can be hard to “see” them individually. This is just another reason we ask you not to make your decision at the kennel door. Chewy is presently kenneled with several little chis in building A at our Eastside shelter. Our staff and/or volunteers will be happy to take Chewy out to meet you away from his buddies.

So while you are sitting around digesting your feast and enjoying the company of family and friends you may notice that something is missing from your life and home. Life is better when you share it with a companion. So, while you are watching football or after the dishes are done do some research. Would a dog, cat or bunny fit into your life and home? If you choose a dog think about how much time you have to devote to training, exercising, play and just plain time to “be” with your companion. Then Google breeds to determine energy, life span, grooming care needed, coat length (if allergies are a consideration) size, cost of food and care and then come in to any of our three locations to find your perfect match.
