Pets of the Week | Sep 19

An update on our three little senior citizens featured last week…….Bean and Hanna were adopted!

Sweet Taylor is a bit lonely but his fan club at our Eastside shelter is showering him with love until his forever person comes along.

Our first dog is a really cool dog named Nova and she can be seen at our Lucky Paws location and our second dog is a perfect size—-not too small and not too big….just right.

Nova (ID# A 1724801) is a 1 year & 1 month old, female Golden colored Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever and Chow Chow mix. She weighs 41 pounds.  She is calm quiet and pretty laid back in her kennel. She is quite gentle and family friendly. She enjoys taking her daily walks. She is still puppyish in many ways and will need daily walks and exercises. She loves to fetch toys. When they were conducting her SAFER test they found her breed instincts kicked in. She fetched the stuffed duck very gently and released it softly. Our staff want to make sure this very special dog goes to someone that will understand her breed and help her use her talents to work her brain or even to fetch those ducks. She will be a great family companion as she loves to receive and give affection. She was also found to be dog friendly so if you have another dog take him/her to Lucky Paws for a meet and greet. She enjoys taking walks alongside her friends and is quick to give a greeting and wag of her tail. She has that wavy longer fur unique to her breed too. It will require some brushing but is shiny and sleek. She came to us a stray so that is why she has this name but you can come up with something a bit more creative. Come meet lovely Nova at Lucky Paws in Coronado Center mall.

Nova

Panda (ID# A 1639825) is a 4 year old, female black & white Smooth Coated Chihuahua mix. She is a great size…not tiny or delicate yet still very small weighing 23 pounds. Panda was surrendered with another dog because her parent could not longer afford to take care of them. She smaller sister was adopted and now Panda has a new kennel mate that she is sharing company with. This perky gal has some grey on her face but she is a fun dog. She walks well on leash but pulls just a little with excitement. We usually suggest a harness as it is better not having pressure on her trachea. She loves her daily walks and then jumps up on our bench for some love and attention. She is a friendly outgoing gal that wants to greet every person she meets and most dogs too. She is family friendly too. Panda has a soft shiny black coat with four white socks. She is ready to meet you at our Eastside shelter.

If your present fur-kid is a pit bull breed or pit bull mix bring him/her to AWD for some fun FREE training exercises. Our wonderful sponsors are donating prizes you and your companion can compete for while showing off the smarts you learn during these classes.  If you happen do adopt one of these great dogs during the month of October you may also bring your new companion to these same classes. We look forward to meeting you and your companions.

Free Pit Bull Training During the Month of October

The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department is hosting free Pit Bull and Pit mix training every Saturday during the month of October.

Animal Welfare’s goal is to get much-needed resources to these dogs and the folks who love them. Understanding the breed of a Pit Bull is the first step to being a responsible pet owner. A well-trained Pit Bull can be an ambassador for his breed, showing the world that with a loving home and training, Pit Bulls can make wonderful pets. Education and responsible owners are critical in changing the perception of this breed.

Animal Welfare Department staff would like to express heartfelt appreciation to Petco, Pet Safe, and Be Positive! Family Dog Training for their enthusiasm and generous sponsorship in their efforts to help end the current cycle of public misconception and homelessness among Pit Bulls.
