Santa Fe K-9 aggression

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Santa Fe Police Department K-9 “Ayke” is featured on recently released video showing him in March biting one of his own, and it isin’t the first time. During the arrest of 35 year old suspect Rick Chavez last spring, Ayke’s handler released him to assist in the arrest and the K-9 charged fellow officer Charles Ovalle and began biting him on the forearm. In 2022, SFPD officer Damian Vigil claimed the same dog attacked his face during a training exercise. In 2023, Vigil filed a lawsuit against SFPD and the City of Santa Fe. The lawsuit alleges Vigil needed extensive surgery to repair his face and that Ayke attacked a suspect similarly six months before the demonstration.
