Update on Valencia County shooting

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Police have released details about a shooting involving Valencia County Sheriff’s deputies that left one person is dead. The incident happened over the weekend in Los Lunas. New Mexico State Police says neighbors on the 100 block of La Ladera Road, reported Thomas Rodriguez for firing a rifle into the air. According to police, V-C-S-O found Rodriguez armed with a gun, before he entered his home. Law enforcement deputies then left to initiate the court process for that extreme risk firearms protection order. A neighbor, Michael Gabaldon armed with a handgun told deputies Rodriguez tried to run him over so he armed himself. According to VCSO, Rodriguez again refused to exit his home. Deputies then returned shortly after for an exchange of gunfire between Rodriguez and Gabaldon. After the shooting, Rodriguez was seen by law enforcement entering his home. VCSO says the shooting resulted in the death of Gabaldon after at least one deputy shot at him. Rodriguez eventually surrender to law enforcement after SWAT units surrounded the home.
