(Albuquerque)-The social distancing rules that are in place due to coronavirus are having an impact on New Mexico’s blood supply. The donor recruitment representative for Vitalant says there’s now a blood shortage in the state. Drew Sharpless tells the Albuquerque Journal that fewer blood drives are being held…although the public response so far has been good.
Vitalant operates four blood donor centers around the state…and supplies blood to all of New Mexico’s hospitals. The Journal reports that, so far, local hospitals have not reported dangerous conditions related to lower blood supplies.
Health experts say donating blood does not increase your chances of contracting coronavirus.
