Heavy Snowfall Doesn’t Wipe Out Fire Danger

DESPITE HEAVY WINTER SNOWFALL, THERE’S STILL A RISK OF FIRE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTHERN NEW MEXICO. THAT ACCORDING TO FOREST SERVICE OFFICIALS, WHO TELL THE SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN THAT THEY’LL BE MONITORING CONDITIONS CLOSELY THROUGH JUNE, WHICH IS OFTEN THE HOTTEST, DRIEST MONTH IN THE AREA.

THE SANTA FE NATIONAL FOREST WAS CLOSED TO PUBLIC ACCESS FOR FIVE WEEKS LAST SUMMER DUE TO HIGH RISK OF WILDFIRE. THE CARSON NATIONAL FOREST FOLLOWED SUIT, AS DID STATE PARKS AND OTHER PUBLIC LANDS.
