NM’s Role in Black Hole Research

NEW MEXICO’S VERY LARGE ARRAY WEST OF SOCORRO CONTRIBUTED TO RESEARCH ON THE BLACK HOLE THAT MANY OF YOU SAW SO MUCH OF IN THE NEWS ON MONDAY. A TEAM OF SCIENTISTS … INCLUDING CHIEF SCIENTIST AND ASTROPHYSICISTCHRIS CARILLI IN SOCORRO AT NEW MEXICO TECH … RELEASED THE FIRST IMAGE OF A BLACK HOLE MONDAY. THE IMAGE SHOWS A DARK RING THAT DEFINES THE BLACK HOLE … WHICH IS SURROUNDED BY THE EVENT HORIZON , OR THE FIERY ORANGE SUPERHEATED GAS AND DUST.

CARILLI AT NEW MEXICO TECH TELLS THE ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL THAT BLACK HOLES USUALLY OCCUR WHEN A STAR’S GRAVITY CAUSES IT TO CAVE IN ON ITSELF. THE GRAVITY IS SO STRONG THAT NOT EVEN LIGHT CAN ESCAPE FROM THE HOLE.
