IT’S NEARLY INVISIBLE TO THE EYE. THAT’S WHAT STATE POLICE CAPTAIN TROY WEISLER SAYS ABOUT TELLING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MARIJUANA AND HEMP. NOW THAT LICENSED MARIJUANA GROWERS WILL BE ALLOWED TO GROW HEMP IN NEW MEXICO STARTING IN JULY, STATE POLICE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY CAN TELL ONE PRODUCT FROM THE OTHER.
STATE POLICE ARE NOW BUYING FIELD TESTING KITS THAT’LL MEASURE THE AMOUNT OF THC IN THE PLANT. WEISLER SAYS THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POT AND HEMP IS HOW MUCH THC IS ACTUALLY IN MARIJUANA. STATE POLICE SAY THE TESTING KITS ARE THEIR WAY OF GETTING AHEAD OF THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THEY THINK POT SMUGGLERS WILL TRY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE NEW LAW, SAYING THEY DIDN’T KNOW THEY WERE TRANSPORTING MARIJUANA INTO THE STATE.
