THE BERNALILLO COUNTY COMMISSION ON TUESDAY WILL VOTE ON WHETHER TO APPROVE THE DESIGN FOR THE FORMER PNM BUILDING DOWNTOWN. IF APPROVED, IT’LL TAKE TWO YEARS TO COMPLETE THE ALVARADO SQUARE BUILDING INTO ONE-STOP SHOPPING FOR THE PUBLIC WHEN DOING COUNTY BUSINESS.
THE COUNTY WANTS TO PUT 900 PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING. THERE’S ALSO BEEN DISCUSSION OF PUTTING A MEDICAL CLINIC AND CHILD CARE SERVICES INSIDE. CHIEF PROJECT MANAGER SHIREE MCKENZIE TELLS KOB TV THERE’D BE A CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER ON THE FIRST FLOOR, WITH THE COUNTY ASSESSOR, THE CLERK AND SOLID WASTE DEPARTMENT ALSO ON THE FIRST FLOOR.
BUT NOW IT’LL COST MORE THAN 45 MILLION DOLLARS INSTEAD OF 3 MILLION DOLLARS TO UPGRADE THE BUILDING.
