Governor Signs Energy Bill

GOVERNOR MICHELLE LUJAN GRISHAM HAS SIGNED A BILL REQUIRING THAT NEW MEXICO GET ITS ELECTRICITY FROM CARBON-FREE SOURCES BY THE YEAR 2045. THE GOVERNOR HAD BEEN A BIG SUPPORTER OF THE MEASURE DURING THIS YEAR’S LEGISLATIVE SESSION.

THE BILL ESTABLISHES FUNDS TO EASE THE ECONOMIC PAINS OF SHUTTING DOWN A COAL FIRED POWER PLANT IN THE FOUR CORNERS AREA. BUT REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE JAMES STRICKLER OF FARMINGTON TELLS THE ASSOCIATED PRESS THAT TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN ANNUAL WAGES AND BENEFITS WILL BE LOST ONCE THE SAN JUAN GENERATING STATION AND ADJACENT MINE ARE CLOSED IN 2022.
