ALBUQUERQUE’S NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE WON’T HAVE RADAR AT ITS DISPOSAL FOR A WHILE. METEOROLOGIST IN CHARGE KERRY JONES SAYS THE RADAR UNIT AT DOUBLE EAGLE-2 AIRPORT IS GETTING A MAJOR UPGRADE. :
JONES SAYS THE RADAR UNIT WAS INSTALLED 25 YEARS AGO…AND THE UPGRADE WILL EXTEND ITS LIFE FOR ANOTHER 20 YEARS. JONES SAYS THEY’LL USE SATELLITE TECHNOLOGY AND GROUND STATION DATA TO MONITOR STORMS WHILE THE RADAR IS DOWN.
