ALBUQUERQUE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IS LOOKING AT A BIG FINANCIAL HIT NEXT FISCAL YEAR. THE ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL REPORTS THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS EXPECTING A FIVE MILLION DOLLAR LOSS IN FUNDING…DUE TO A DROP IN ENROLLMENT. THE STATE’S FUNDING FORMULA IS BASED ON HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN A DISTRICT.
FOR THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR, THERE ARE JUST UNDER 82-THOUSAND STUDENTS ENROLLED AT APS…A DROP OF THREE PERCENT FROM LAST YEAR…AND DOWN 10 PERCENT FROM THE ENROLLMENT FIGURES FROM TEN YEARS AGO. A DISTRICT OFFICIAL SAYS ONE FACTOR IN THE ENROLLMENT DECLINE IS SMALLER KINDERGARTEN CLASSES, AND THAT’S IMPACTING OTHER GRADE COUNTS.
