THE VOTE ON WHETHER TO BAN PLASTIC BAGS IN ALBUQUERQUE IS BEING DEFERRED BY THE CITY COUNCIL. THE ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL REPORTS IT’LL BE TWO MORE MONTHS BEFORE THE COUNCIL VOTES ON THE BAN. COUNCILORS ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT VOTED 6-TO-3 TO DEFER ACTION ON THE PLASTICS BAN FOR ANOTHER 60 DAYS.
THE REASON FOR THE DEFERMENT: COUNCILORS SAY THEY WANT TO SEE RESULTS FIRST FROM AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE MEASURE. THEY SAY BANNING PLASTICS WILL IMPACT EVERYONE IN SOME WAY.
THE PLASTICS BAN BILL WOULD PROHIBIT RESTAURANTS AND RETAILERS FROM GIVING CUSTOMERS PLASTIC BAGS, PLASTIC STRAWS AND CARRYOUT FOOD CONTAINERS THAT CANNOT BE RECYCLED.
