Dreamers to Defenders

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Mayor Tim Keller says the new state law just passed which expands who can become law enforcement officers in New Mexico, can turn dreamers into defenders. Senate Bill 364, will allow people who are DACA recipients, or legal permanent residents, to now become a police officer, marshal, or sheriff anywhere in the state. Supporters of the bill say this will help address law enforcement vacancies across New Mexico. APD says the push will help to continue lower crime rates in the metro. Chief Harold Medina voiced his support, saying it will help grow the ranks in a way that is reflective of the community of Albuquerque.
