Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — With the planned retirement of a significant number of the animals’ caretakers, the last members of a colony of former test subject chimpanzees living in an Alamogordo facility will be transferred to a sanctuary in Louisiana. Animal rights activists have pushed for years for the National Institutes of Health to relocate the animals still living at the Alamogordo Primate Facility on Holloman Air Force Base to Chimp Haven, a wooded preserve in northern Louisiana. The animals have not been used as test subjects since 2015.
