Addressing juvenile crime increase

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — The Albuquerque Police Department reports that juvenile arrests are increasing each year. Over the last five years, police have arrested or cited 2,600 adolescents ages 11 to 17.Some of the most common reasons juveniles are being arrested for are auto thefts and gun-related crimes. APD Chief Harold Medina says a couple of reasons juveniles keep committing crimes is a lack of supervision amd not knowing how to de-escalate confrontations. Adding, that arresting kids doesn’t change the problem. His department is working to include more community engagement to help build positive involvement with law enforcement. However, he stresses lawmakers need to tackle the problem from a new angle, by forming a committee that addresses youth from the bottom up.
