MDC officer removed from duty

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Nathan Shpiller, a corrections officer at the Metro Detention Center was removed from duty in August and is on paid leave while the department conducts an internal investigation. He’s been accused of orchestrating attacks in the shower on two inmates who suffer from mental illness. The Albuquerque Journal reports that a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office incident form says that security camera footage showed inmates attacking other inmates while under the supervision of Officer Shpiller. He’s also accused of using pepper spray on one of the inmates while he was alone and naked in his cell. The incidents occurred in July.
