Grandparents raising grandchildren

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Micah McCoy, the communications director for the New Mexico Early Childhood, Education and Care Department says, grandparents raising grandchildren’s a big issue in the Land of Enchantment. As a result, his department’s working to make the transition easier for grandparents, with programs like home visiting. They also have new family resource centers coming online in Roswell and Española. These will serve as one-stop shops for families. Researchers report during 2023, there were roughly 36,000 grandparents and kin raising children in New Mexico. Six years ago, that number was 30,000. One of the root causes for the transition in the state is alcohol and drug misuse.
