Albuquerque schools are hot

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — Many Albuquerque Public Schools buildings and classrooms are without working cooling systems, and teachers say it’s nearly impossible to work and learn in those types of conditions. In response, Ellen Bernstein with the Albuquerque Teachers Federation blames some of it on the aging infrastructure, and that many schools use swamp coolers. Adding, that even when a system is working properly, it can only cut the heat by 15 to 20 degrees. If we’re talking about 90-degree days, it’s still very uncomfortable. She says the Albuquerque Teachers Union does work to make sure cooling issues do not go overlooked. APS has not confirmed how many schools are having issues, or how many HVAC systems they’re working on.
