BernCo celebrates artificial turf fields at Mesa Del Sol sports complex

Bernalillo County, NM (KKOB) — BernCo celebrated the completion of four new artificial turf fields at the county’s Mesa Del Sol Regional Outdoor Sports Complex this afternoon. County, state, and local officials and politicians, as well as youth soccer players laced up their sneakers to knock some soccer balls into the newly-constructed goals for a “first kick” event, signaling the first use of the four new artificial turf fields, with more amenities to come.

We’re excited to see these fields finally open up and provide a critical space for use by local youth sports teams,” says District 2 Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada. “This brings us one step closer towards being a place where youth sports teams from across the Southwest can come to compete, which in turn helps support the local economy.”

The celebration marks the completion of the project’s second phase. When completed, the facility will feature 32 fields, both grass and artificial turf. There are also plans to build a variety of tournament amenities such as bathrooms, food-truck hookups, and shade structures. Additional phases will also include the construction of improved access roads, extensive parking, re-use water infrastructure, and improved lighting, which includes state-of-the-art sports field systems.
