Councilor Champine on pre-trial detention bill

Albuquerque, Nm (KKOB) — The New Mexico Legislature passed SB 271 which establishes that when the court receives notice that a person on pretrial release for a felony crime is arrested for a subsequent felony, that person shall remain in custody without bond until judges on each case hold hearings to consider modification of the conditions of release.

“New Mexicans are tired of seeing violent criminals right back on the street after they’re arrested,” said Albuquerque District 8 Councilor Dan Champine. “The state legislative session has ended, but not before they passed a significant change to pretrial release. I encourage Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to sign SB 271 as quickly as possible. This is an important procedural change that will help our criminal justice system keep more repeat offenders behind bars and is a step towards shutting the revolving door that has let so many of our families down. Thank you to Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto for leading this effort, which had previously failed in both chambers.”

Councilor Champine offered a Memorial in his first Albuquerque City Council meeting in early January. The Memorial, approved unanimously by the Council, encouraged the State Legislature to vigorously debate a fix to New Mexico’s revolving door in the criminal justice system.
