Bernalillo County, NM (KKOB) — In a significant step forward following the tragic loss of the Metro 2 helicopter in
2022 and the subsequent suspension of operations, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is honored to
announce the relaunch of the Metro Air Support Unit with Metro 1, an A-Star B3 Helicopter, resuming law
enforcement patrols in the skies.
After an extensive period of review and enhancement, including overhauling the unit, updating of critical
policies and procedures, and intensive additional training for our team, the Metro Air Support Unit is set to
recommence operations as of today. This meticulous process has encompassed the adoption of best practices
in safety and operational efficiency, backed by an expansion of our team of dedicated mechanics and pilots.
The Metro 1 helicopter will initially be tasked with law enforcement missions exclusively, including air
patrol, critical incident response, and collaborative operations with the Albuquerque Police Department’s Air
Unit to provide comprehensive aerial support across Bernalillo County and the Albuquerque Metro area.
The Metro Air Support Unit is a testament to the collaboration between the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s
Office, Bernalillo County Fire & Rescue, and UNM Emergency Medicine personnel. Their continued support
is invaluable, and their contributions are the backbone of our renewed vision.
As we prepare for the future, our focus remains on enhancing our capabilities, including the integration of a
new helicopter specifically tailored for search and rescue missions. Although these efforts are ongoing and
will be realized once all safety protocols are firmly in place, we are excited to anticipate the arrival of the new
addition to our helicopter fleet, known as Metro 4, whose details will be disclosed in the coming months.
In homage to our fallen comrades, the name Metro 2 has been retired. Furthermore, Metro 3, our fixed-wing
Cessna T-41C, will transition to a non-response role and used solely for training purposes.
The bolstering of our unit also includes the training of additional Tactical Flight Officers—deputies equipped
to assist in aerial law enforcement operations. Our team now consists of two full-time pilots, two full-time
mechanics, and a cadre of deputies providing auxiliary support, ensuring that the Metro Air Support Unit is
fully prepared to serve and protect from above.
