Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — This week, City Councilor Klarissa Peña is traveling to National City, California to participate in the Mid-Year National Cruising Community Policing Conference on December 1-2, 2023. Councilor Peña has been the leading voice in building a national movement to repeal anti-cruising legislation and to create community policing programs based on cruising culture.
“It’s an honor to join leaders from other cities and communities throughout the country, to share our experience and lessons learned here in Albuquerque,” said Councilor Peña. “We’ve built a great nationwide coalition and I’m excited to strategize on our next steps and future projects related to cruising and community policing.”
Councilor Klarissa Peña will be sharing Albuquerque’s history of anti-cruising efforts and her work to repeal anti-cruising legislation in November 2018. The State of California recently passed AB436, which repealed the state’s municipalities’ ability to enforce anti-cruising regulations. This conference will be an opportunity to network with the Mayor Ron Morrison of National City, CA, and other city officials, police departments, school systems, and lowrider communities to build on the capacity to support lowriders and the youth of these communities.
The successful Lowrider Police Vehicle Program and Lowrider Bike Club in Albuquerque will also be presented by Councilor Peña, as other municipalities are planning to start and/or grow their similar projects in their communities.
