Bernalillo County, NM (KKOB) — The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office reports a deputy-involved shooting following a
prolonged and dangerous situation involving a barricaded subject. The incident, which lasted approximately 12 hours, tragically concluded with the suspect succumbing to a gunshot wound inflicted by at least one member of our SWAT team.
Incident Overview:
At approximately 5:53 AM on November 12, 2023, North II Deputies were dispatched to 6697 4th St. NW,
Bernalillo County Fire Rescue Station 30, in response to reports of a male subject in a vehicle armed with a
handgun, threatening self-harm. Upon arrival, deputies found the subject obstructing the bay doors of Station 30 with his vehicle. During the incident, the subject recklessly drove northbound on 4th St. NW in reverse, nearly causing multiple collisions before crashing into a curb. This rendered his vehicle inoperable. K9 units, a drone operator, and our SWAT team were subsequently deployed to the scene in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully.
Safety Measures and Community Impact:
BCFR Station 30 was evacuated, and several local businesses were temporarily closed as a precaution. 4th St. was closed to traffic between Osuna and Green Valley, which remains in effect following the incident.
Conclusion of the Incident:
Despite extensive efforts to de-escalate the situation, it concluded with at least one deputy on the SWAT team discharging their duty weapon, resulting in the suspect being fatally wounded. The male subject was declared deceased at the scene.
Investigation and Next Steps:
All law enforcement officers involved are unharmed and safe. As per our standard operating procedures following a deputy-involved shooting, the Multi-Agency Task Force is actively investigating the incident.
