Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) — The search for a new Albuquerque Public Schools superintendent is in full swing, and APS wants to know what qualities community members would like to see in the district’s next leader.
The person selected will replace Superintendent Scott Elder, who will be leaving APS when his contract expires on June 30, 2024. The board expects to have a new superintendent in place by July 1.
The position has been posted and advertised, and McPherson & Jacobson, the firm working with APS on the search, is accepting applications. Anyone interested has until Dec. 12 to apply.
A key part of the process will be gathering input from families, employees, and other community members. APS Board of Education members will use that input as they evaluate applicants.
To get as much feedback as possible, the board will be engaging in community conversations at two Fall Community Events and will be launching an online survey.

- The first Fall Community Event will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 13 at West Mesa High
- School, 6701 Fortuna Road NW.
- The second Fall Community Event will be on Nov. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Manzano High School,
- 12200 Lomas Blvd. NE. Attendees should park at Wilson Stadium.
The community conversations are a continuation of the listening sessions APS board members held last year to get input on what students should know and be able to do when they graduate. Between those in-person forums and an online survey, the district heard from more than 2,000 people. The board used that input to create five-year goals for the district.
During this month’s Fall Community Events, board members will engage with the community on characteristics they’d like to see in the next APS superintendent.
