A FRUSTRATING PUBLIC MEETING BY THE ESPANOLA SCHOOL BOARD THURSDAY NIGHT. THEY CALLED FOR THE MEETING AFTER A 15 YEAR OLD SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS WAS TASED BY AN OFFICER AT THE SCHOOL. THAT OFFICER, JEREMY BARNES, IS WITH THE RIO ARRIBA SHERIFF’S OFFICE.
BUT THE DISCOVERY WAS THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE … INCLUDING THOSE ON THE SCHOOL BOARD … COULD NOT DISCUSS THE INCIDENT. DEPUTY BARNES LAST MONTH SUSPECTED THE BOY WAS DEALING DRUGS AND TASED HIM SEVERAL TIMES. NOW THE BOY’S FAMILY IS SUING THE DISTRICT.
SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT BOBBIE GUTIERREZ SAYS THEY NEVER GOT DOCUMENTATION THAT DEPUTIES WERE PROPERLY TRAINED TO WORK AT A SCHOOL. HE SAYS THEY SHOULD ASK FOR THE DOCUMENTATION.
