Educators Call for Raising Smoking Age

THE USE OF ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES BY TEENAGERS IN NEW MEXICO HAS SOME EDUCATORS WANTING TO CHANGE THE LEGAL AGE TO PURCHASE TOBACCO PRODUCTS FROM 18 TO 21. THE SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN SAYS THE SANTA FE SCHOOL BOARD MAY VOTE ON A RESOLUTION URGING SCHOOL DISTRICTS STATEWIDE TO PRESS LAWMAKERS TO GET BEHIND LEGISLATION RAISING THE LEGAL AGE TO 21.

THE NEW MEXICAN SAYS A 2017 STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SURVEY SHOWED NEARLY 25 PERCENT OF HIGH SCHOOLERS REPORTED USING AN ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE WITHIN THE PAST THIRTY DAYS. THAT FIGURE IS NEARLY 4 PERCENT HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
