THE TASING OF A SPECIAL ED STUDENT AT ESPANOLA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL IS UNDER INVESTIGATION. AND NOW, THE BOY’S FAMILY IS SUING BOTH THE RIO ARRIBA SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
THE BOY WAS TASED AFTER HE WAS ACCUSED OF TAKING PART IN A DRUG DEAL ON CAMPUS AND GOT INTO A SCUFFLE WITH THE SECURITY STAFF. THE BOY WAS ALLEGEDLY TASED BY DEPUTY JEREMY BARNES … FIRST IN THE CHEST AT CLOSE RANGE, THEN TWICE MORE WHEN THE BOY FELL ON THE FLOOR. BARNES REMAINS ON DUTY BUT SAYS THE BOY WAS UNCOOPERATIVE AND WOULDN’T ALLOW SECURITY TO SEARCH HIM.
MEANWHILE, THE ACLU ISSUED A STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE USE OF A TASER ON A DISABLED STUDENT.
