Two Cases of Tularemia Confirmed in NM

TWO CASES OF TULAREMIA HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED IN TWO SANTA FE COUNTY RESIDENTS. TULAREMIA IS A RARE INFECTION CAUSED BY A BACTERIA THAT IS SPREAD THROUGH INSECT BITES. THE NEW MEXICO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SAYS TULAREMIA CAN ALSO EFFECT DOGS AND CATS, AND IF NOT TREATED, CAN BE SPREAD TO HUMANS.

LAST YEAR THERE WAS ONE CASE IN A HUMAN AND SEVEN IN ANIMALS. IN 2017, THERE WERE FIVE TULAREMIA CASES IN HUMANS AND 39 ANIMAL CASES.
