Protection for Chaco Canyon

SENATOR MARTIN HEINRICH IS PLEASED WITH THE RESULTS OF HIS VISIT TUESDAY WITH U-S INTERIOR SECRETARY DAVID BERNHARDT. HEINRICH SAYS HE SECURED COMMITMENTS TO PLACE ON HOLD ANY LEASING OF LAND WITHIN THE 10-MILE PERIMETER SURROUNDING THE CHACO CULTURE NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK, AN AREA WITH DEEP MEANING TO NEW MEXICO’S PUEBLOS.

HEINRICH SAYS THE HOLD GIVES TIME FOR THE BLM’S RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PLAN TO BE DRAFTED FOR CONGRESS TO CONSIDER. HEINRICH AND SENATOR TOM UDALL, BOTH DEMOCRATS, INTRODUCED THE BILL THAT WOULD WITHDRAW FEDERAL LANDS AROUND CHACO CANYON FOR FURTHER MINERAL DEVELOPMENT.
