IT’S BEEN AROUND 20 YEARS SINCE THE RIO GRANDE HAS HAD THE TYPE OF FLOWS WE’RE SEEING RIGHT NOW IN THE ALBUQUERQUE AREA. THAT FROM JOHN FLECK, DIRECTOR OF UNM’S WATER RESOURCES PROGRAM. HE SAYS THE SNOWPACK AND RUNOFF IN THE RIO GRANDE RIGHT NOW IS THE HIGHEST IT’S BEEN SINCE 2005 … AND POSSIBLY, IF THE RUNOFF CONTINUES, IT’LL BE THE HIGHEST SINCE THE MID 1990S.
FLECK SAYS THERE’S BEEN SOME OVER-BANKING ALONG THE RIVER…BUT NO DAMAGING FLOODING. AND SINCE THERE’S STILL SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS THAT HASN’T MELTED, FLECK EXPECTS RIVER FLOWS TO REMAIN HIGH THROUGH MID JUNE OR EVEN LONGER.
