EIGHTY-TWO SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN NEW MEXICO ARE GETTING EXTRA FUNDING FOR EXTENDED LEARNING TIME. THE STATE PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT SAYS THE 76 MILLION DOLLARS WILL IMPACT MORE THAN 500 SCHOOLS AND MORE THAN 100-THOUSAND STUDENTS, NEARLY A THIRD OF ALL STUDENTS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN NEW MEXICO.
THE P-E-D SAYS RESEARCH SHOWS MUCH OF THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP IS DUE TO AN OPPORTUNITY GAP…WITH STUDENTS FROM LOW INCOME FAMILIES HAVING FEWER HOURS OF LEARNING. THE ADDITIONAL FUNDING IS INTENDED TO HELP SOLVE THAT PROBLEM.
