BERNALILLO COUNTY IS GOING TO DEMOLISH THE OLD JAIL AT 5TH AND ROMA IN DOWNTOWN ALBUQUERQUE. THE DEMOLITION WORK WILL COST TWO AND-A-HALF MILLION DOLLARS.
THE COUNTY LEFT THE JAIL 16 YEARS AGO WHEN THE METRO DETENTION CENTER OPENED ON ALBUQUERQUE’S WEST SIDE. COUNTY SPOKESPERSON TIA BLAND SAYS, IN THE SHORT TERM, THE LAND WILL BE TURNED INTO PARKING.
BLAND TELLS NEWS RADIO KKOB THAT SOMETIME AFTER JULY, THE COUNTY WILL PUT TOGETHER A DEMOLITION PLAN, AND THE BUILDING COULD BE GONE BY THE END OF THE YEAR.
