Residents Attends Meeting on Plastics Ban

ALBUQUERQUE ISN’T THE ONLY CITY THAT WANTS A BAN ON SINGLE-USE PLASTICS. MORE THAN 200 CITIES ALREADY HAVE A SIMILAR BAN IN PLACE. ON SUNDAY, MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE SHOWED UP AT THE KIMO THEATER FOR THE “CLEAN AND GREEN” TOWN HALL TO DISCUSS HOW SUCH A BAN WOULD IMPACT THE CITY.

KOB TV REPORTS RESTAURANT OWNERS ARE AGAINST IT, SAYING IT WOULD DRIVE UP PRODUCTION COSTS AND BE TOO EXPENSIVE FOR THEM. CITY COUNCILOR PAT DAVIS SAYS THE CITY MAY HAVE TO PROVIDE TAX INCENTIVES FOR THOSE RESTAURANTS.

BUT THE COUNCIL SAYS GETTING RID OF PLASTIC BAGS IS THE LEAST EXPENSIVE OPTION OF THE GREENER OPTIONS. THE FINAL VOTE BY THE COUNCIL ON THIS PROPOSAL IS APRIL 15TH. IF IT’S APPROVED, IT WOULD TAKE EFFECT IN JANUARY.
