A CHANGE IN STATUS FOR SOME SCHOOLS IN NEW MEXICO THAT WERE FACING THE POSSIBILITY OF CLOSURE DUE TO POOR PERFORMANCE. ON FRIDAY, PUBLIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT SECRETARY KAREN TRUJILLO SAYS SHE’S CHANGING THE DESIGNATION OF “MORE RIGOROUS INTERVENTION” TO “COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT AND IMPROVEMENT.” IT MEANS THAT CLOSURE IS NO LONGER AN OPTION FOR THREE A-P-S SCHOOLS: HAWTHORNE ELEMENTARY, WHITTIER ELEMENTARY, AND LOS PADILLAS AS WELL AS DULCE ELEMENTARY IN DULCE.
ALL FOUR SCHOOLS HAD RECEIVED AN “F” GRADE OVER MULTIPLE YEARS, PUTTING THEM ON NOTICE FROM THE PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION THAT ACTION MIGHT BE TAKEN. NOW, THE P-E-D IS NO LONGER USING LETTER GRADES FOR SCHOOLS BUT WILL INSTEAD PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR SCHOOLS IN NEED, AS WELL AS INSTALLING HIGH LEVELS OF ACCOUNTABILITY.
