IT’LL BE THE FIRST GUN CONTROL MEASURE TO HIT THE GOVERNOR’S DESK. A SENATE BILL THAT REQUIRES BACKGROUND CHECKS ON PRIVATE GUN SALES PASSED IN THE STATE HOUSE ON A VOTE OF 42-TO-27 MONDAY NIGHT.
LEADING UP THE VOTE, THERE WAS A LOT OF PUSH BACK FROM BOTH SIDES ON THIS BILL … BUT THE DEBATE MONDAY NIGHT WAS SURPRISINGLY QUIET. SENATE BILL 8 MAKES IT ILLEGAL FOR ANYONE TO SELL A FIREARM IN A PRIVATE TRANSACTION WITHOUT DOING A FEDERAL BACKGROUND CHECK ON THE BUYER. THE ONE EXCEPTION IS WHEN YOU SELL A GUN TO A FAMILY MEMBER.
HOUSE REPUBLICANS SAY THE MEASURE WON’T STOP CRIMINALS FROM PURCHASING A GUN. GOVERNOR LUJAN GRISHAM SAYS SHE’LL SIGN THE MEASURE INTO LAW WHEN IT ARRIVES ON HER DESK.
