A BILL OVERHAULING NEW MEXICO’S TEACHER EVALUATION SYSTEM HAS WON UNANIMOUS APPROVAL IN THE STATE SENATE. ITS SPONSOR, MAJORITY WHIP MIMI STEWART OF ALBUQUERQUE, SAYS THE BILL FOCUSES ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND NOT PUNISHMENT, TO EVALUATE TEACHERS.
SCHOOLS WOULD NEED TO IMPLEMENT THE NEW SYSTEM BY OCTOBER. IT REQUIRES ANNUAL EVALUATIONS FOR ALL NEW TEACHERS, AND THOSE EXPERIENCED TEACHERS WHO HAVE RECEIVED POOR EVALUATIONS.
