THE HOUSE EDUCATION COMMITTEE HAS APPROVED A BILL CALLING FOR A MORATORIUM ON NEW CHARTER SCHOOLS IN NEW MEXICO. THE ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL REPORTS THE BILL WOULD BAN ANY NEW CHARTER SCHOOLS FROM OPENING…AND WOULD GO INTO EFFECT IN JUNE UNTIL THE YEAR 2022.
THE BILL’S CO-SPONSOR, DEMOCRAT CHRISTINE TRUJILLO OF ALBUQUERQUE, SAYS IT WOULD GIVE THE STATE TIME TO ANALYZE THE ACADEMIC OUTCOME OF EXISTING CHARTER SCHOOLS. OPPONENTS SAY THE BILL DISCOUNTS THE SUCCESSES THAT CHARTER SCHOOLS HAVE SEEN IN NEW MEXICO.
