Jury Seated in Tai Chan Trial

Fifteen jurors are chosen for former Santa Fe Deputy Tai Chan’s retrial getting underway in Las Cruces. The jurors were selected Monday from 100 potential jury members. It took nearly eight hours to choose the jury and three alternates.

Chan is charged in the shooting death of fellow Deputy Jeremy Martin at a Las Cruces hotel in 2014. Chan’s first trial last year ended in a hung jury and mistrial.

Chan testified that Martin threatened to kill him with Chan’s duty weapon. The two then struggled for the gun and a single round was fired. Chan says he then seized the gun and started firing.

The judge has granted a motion to allow the jury to view the crime scene at the Hotel Encanto where the shooting occurred.
