More talk of tax hikes- this time for Bernalillo County. The County Commission Tuesday night takes up the issue of whether to approve a three-sixteens of one percent sales tax hike. County Manager Julie Morgas Baca says if the tax increase is not approved, the county will likely have to lay workers off and cut public safety spending.
Cuts would include reducing the budget for every department by 4%, mandatory furloughs, and an immediate hiring freeze.
County Commissioner and Albuquerque Mayoral Candidate Wayne Johnson opposes the tax hike, telling the Albuquerque Journal the county would be balancing its budget on the backs of already overburdened residents.
