The Land of Enchantment was the land of upsets in sports last weekend. Saturday night the Lobos got their biggest win in program history by defeating Boise State on the road. Now this isn’t the Boise State of a few years ago contending for National Championships, but still a formidable foe and unlikely win for the lobos came into the game as a 30 point underdog. It has taken awhile for Bob Davie to right this program after the disaster that was the Mike Locksley experiment. But after two quality wins, first against Utah State and another versus Boise State maybe, this program has turned a corner. The Lobos are bowl eligible for the first time in nearly a decade, and could actually win a division title and play in the Mountain West conference championship game if they win there last two games of the regular season. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, hopefully Bob Davie has gotten this program back to where it was when Rocky Long was dumped or resigned, 6-8 wins a year going to bowl games, not lighting the world on fire but also not being a laughing stock of college football, like they were during the Mike Locksley era.
The second upset for New Mexico, was Holly Holm shocking the world and defeating Ronda Rousey and claiming the UFC women’s title. The seemingly unbeatable Rousey went down in the second round to New Mexico’s own Holm. In fact Holm was such a large underdog, just to net 5 dollars profit you would had to bet 100 dollars, to get 500 bucks, you would have to lay down 10,000 dollars. The Holm upset was reminiscent of Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson in Tokyo, 25 years ago. I have had the opportunity to interview and watch Holly fight for many years and her moment in the sun could not be better deserved by anyone.
