We had a grand time at the Dog Ball. Congrats to Jill Lane for being awarded the very first Terrie Q. Sayre community award…well deserved.
I guess everyone was getting ready for the dog ball because Clifford the very handsome big red dog and little family friendly dog friendly Lucky did not find their forever homes. They are still in our first building at the Eastside shelter and can’t wait to meet you.
I never have one favorite dog I work with at AWD because we have so many truly great dogs. This week our two featured dogs are two of my favorites that I work with every day I am there.
Bethy (ID# A 1722509) is a 4 year old, female black Dachshund mix. She weighs 16 pounds. Dogs come to our shelter for many reasons whether stray or the various reasons they are surrendered. Most are in a shelter because a human failed them not because they are bad dogs. Bethy has a story to tell that started out a sad one. Bethy has a nice coat and is a good weight so once must have been a beloved pet. Her family moved away and just left her behind to fend for herself. She was forced to find shelter and live for a few weeks under an abandoned storage shed. Kids in the neighborhood would trap her under the shed throwing rocks at her and teasing, abusing her being very mean. Someone called animal control and Bethy was saved. As you might expect she is a shy girl. We quickly saw that she wanted to trust and be treated with love and kindness. She is still a shy girl but has warmed up to several of our volunteers and staff. She is stressed by the noise in the kennel area so she can be timid in her kennel. When taken to a quiet area away from the kennel buildings she can relax. She walks well on leash staying close once she knows you are her friend. She seems to enjoy her walks and once she knows she can trust you she is a happy little girl with tail up and wagging frequently looking up to give you a smile. Bethy is looking for a calmer quiet home and would like her person to be patient, loving and gentle. She was found to be dog friendly but has not been playful. She just seems to relish finding caring people that treat her with love and kindness. Bethy will be a truly devoted companion. She would love a mature home and might do well in a home with a teenager that is on the mellower side with few parties and no hustle and bustle. Although she is well behaved she is frightened of children and who can blame her with the way she was treated. Bethy is at our Eastside shelter. Most likely you will find her in our second building lying quietly on her bed or resting outside away from her noisy neighbors. Once you meet this sweet girl her soulful eyes will capture your heart. Bethy’s next home needs to be a forever home, not just an “until we move” home.
Josephina (ID# A1722250) is a 2 year old, female white Toy Fox Terrier. She weighs 18 pounds. She came to us when her owner moved into a smaller place. Josephina was a bit unsure and scared of her new surroundings. She is in our shy dog program but has really become a friendly, happy cuddle bug and very popular with our volunteers. Even our brand new volunteers keep saying they just can not believe she was shy. She appears to be fearful of uniforms so we think someone in some kind of uniform was not nice to her. She is easy on leash and loves to go for walks. She lived with another dog and has attended our small dog play groups enjoying a bit of doggie play. She can be a little bossy with her friends in the close quarters of a kennel. Josephina loves lap time and is quick to give a kiss. We think she would do best in a quieter home that does not have children or grandchildren…they just seem to be too scary for Josephina. She will be a great daily walking partner, best friend and devoted companion. You will find this very pretty young lady at our Eastside shelter in building A.
