Lindsey one of our featured dogs from last week left for Colorado where she will begin training to become a service dog.
Little Uly is in a new kennel with two other little Chihuahuas. He is doing fine but really wants his forever home. If you are more of a couch potato but want to take a daily walk around the block then please consider visiting Uly at our Eastside shelter.
Several of our featured dogs over the last few weeks have been on the calmer side looking for a less active home. This week we have to fun energetic dogs looking for families that will take them for walks every day, perhaps hiking or jogging…no couch potatoes here please.
Zinnia (ID# A 1720678) is a 2 year old, female tan Australian Cattle dog mix. She weighs 34 pounds. Zinnia has a gorgeous coat that will require regular brushing. She is looking for an active family and would do best with children over 12 because she does herd nipping heels and such during play. Like many cattle dogs Zinnia is very smart and needs activity to keep her brain stimulated. She is good on leash so could be a great hiking or jogging partner. Zinnia enjoys our doggie play groups. She is eager to meet other dogs and played very well. She has several play buddies at our shelter and our second featured dog plays very well with Zinnia. These buddies enjoy herding play too. Many dogs are just fine when other dogs nip at heals or grab fur around their necks during play but softer, timid or older dogs may not enjoy this kind of play. Remember we are always happy to conduct a meet and greet between your present dog and a prospective adoptee. I am fascinated by the herding instinct in these breeds but it can be a little frightening to young children. This is why we usually suggest children around 12. At this age children can learn this that the dogs is just having fun and doing what it was bred to do. Zinnia loves people and receiving attention. She loves her treats and has learned the cue for sit. When you bring her to the free training class that comes with her adoption you may learn more tricks to teach her. Your teacher can also help you learn fun games to share with Zinnia to exercise her brain as well as her body. Zinnia does have a softer side and enjoys cuddling. She rests calmly and quietly in her bed. This beauty is such a cutie she gazes out at the people with just the tip of her tongue showing. She is now living in a room in our lobby and many people have commented on how well behaved she is as well as how very cute she looks when doing this. If Zinnia is your perfect match come meet her at our Eastside shelter.
Turk (ID# A1721025) is a 1 year old, male, black & white Basenji mix. He weighs only 35 pounds. Turk is a very fun dog. He loves people, affection and play. He plays a game of “keep away” when it is time to put the leash on almost puppy like. Once the leash is on he is pretty good on leash and enjoys taking a walk. He also enjoys playing with toys. We think Turk’s last home did take Turk new and different places so he could become familiar with new places sights and sounds. This is a very important duty we pet owners need to do to help socialize our companions to the big world. Brining Turk to the free training class is a good start. When dogs learn new things even tricks it builds confidence and there he will be around new people and other dogs. Turk enjoys our doggie play groups. First we always let the dogs meet or greet each other. Turk is a very smart boy that greets politely as he knows other dogs may be a bit unsure at first just like he is. Very quickly he is ready to play and have a great time. One of Turks favorite play buddies is Zinnia. He is just fine being “herded” during play and seems to have learned from Zinnia and a couple other herding dogs that this is a fun way to play. He is a fairly energetic dog. Just like Zinnia he will need daily walks and could be a great hiking or jogging partner. He should do fine with children age 12. Like most dogs Turk enjoys a good game of chase and he likely will “herd” his friends since it is so much fun. Turk certainly has the build and curly tail of the Basenji breed. He also is very quiet during play. Turk is very well behaved in his kennel usually lying on his bed calmly waiting for his turn to take a walk, play or be lucky enough to meet potential new parents. Turk’s coat is shorter and he keeps it quite clean and shiny. You will find this boy at our Eastside shelter in our first building A.
