BV’s Confidential

Another week another incident involving Donald Trump. This time it was John McCain who struck Trump’s ire.  McCain has never really been a Trump fan and has been vocal about his displeasure with the Donald since he announced his candidacy for president.  Trump in a Q and A questioned McCain as a war hero.  Now no one, not even Trump, would question McCain’s courage and service to our country, but Trump brings up an interesting point.  It is well documented that many of the men McCain served with and was held captive with in Vietnam had their doubts about his heroics in the war.  So what makes you a war hero?  Just serving, being captured, or something more.  In our society we throw the word hero around quite a bit and the criteria for what constitutes a hero is different.  Ultimately, it is a good thing that Trump got into this little skirmish with McCain.  If we have learned anything about the Trump campaign so far, it is that he is not afraid to tackle tough issues other Republican candidates are scared to address and he will go after sacred cows.  Which brings us to the McCain-Trump feud.  McCain has been running rogue for a while now, in fact he is about as conservative as Eleanor Roosevelt was.  But not many people questioned him. Why? He’s a “war hero”.  If someone went after McCain they would be labeled anti-veteran or anti-military.  Trump simply does not care.  He will go after anyone if he has the reason.  What is different about this feud with McCain is that unlike his other feuds, most notably with Rosie O’Donnell, and recently with NBC and the Magician Penn Jillette, is that this time he is playing for keeps.  This isn’t showbiz, it is the future of our country.  Trump may not become president, but at least he is opening our eyes and generating a discussion.  No Republican presidential candidate has done that since Reagan in 1980.
