Although there have been A LOT of owner surrenders this week we also are celebrating that there were MANY adoptions so we just have to highlight a few that were featured on this radio spot.
Lucy & Chico featured last weekend went home Tuesday together.
Missy featured two weeks ago was adopted. Some time ago we featured two sister combinations Labs Sara & Sonia the shiest Sonia went home Tuesday. The other sister pair was Tea and Smores. Shier Smores went home Wednesday.
It was a feel good week celebrating these adoptions as well as many more. As we’ve said in the past when someone adopts a dog from a shelter or rescue you are saving two dogs. But adopting you have saved that dog and the dog that will take its place in the kennel it previously occupied. We are getting to know all the new surrenders/strays and wow, we have some handsome/pretty dogs that are different and unusual breed mixes. Please consider adding a forever companion to your home.
Both of the dogs we are featuring this week had a lot of fun on the 4th of July. A handful of volunteers took dogs to march in the Madrid 4th of July parade in hopes of finding homes. Our little group was quite popular and we received lots of well wishes. The dogs enjoyed the attention and they enjoyed their day out away from the shelter and did very well.
Arnie (ID# A 1719498) is a 9 month old, male tan Australian Cattle dog mix. He weighs only 30 pounds. Arnie must have something quite small in his “mix” as at 9 months he is quite small so he will not be the size of most cattle dogs. Arnie became lost from his home and family and was very frightened when he was brought to our shelter. It is so hard on a pet to be in a place where nothing is familiar so they have no familiar security and are scared of everything.
Arnie was put in to our Shy Dog Program and has blossomed very quickly. He loves attention and affection. He really wants to be a lap dog. He is on the smaller size but usually wiggles off and begins play quickly. He loves stuffed toys but like most puppies can shred them quickly so we take it away after play time is over. This smart boy also buries his treats so he can go find them later. Arnie is all puppy with playful energy. Like all dogs especially young pups he would benefit from attending the free training classes that accompany our adoptions. These classes are a great way for your new pet to bond with the family. Your new companion becomes a well behaved dog and gets to learn a few tricks too. We found Arnie loves to play with other dogs and this helped bring him out of his shell. He has this cute little dark marking all the way down his back that can look deceivingly like hackles (when a dog’s fur “hackles up”). In Arnie’s case he is just so excited to get the opportunity to play. He has several dogs that are now his play group BFF’s. When you come to the shelter you will notice a “Q-code” on his kennel door. If you have this app on you smart phone you can see Arnie and his friends in action during play group. Arnie is eager to please so with patience and time getting to learn his new home’s routine training should go well. We have kiddy pools in our play yard and Arnie loves to splash around playing and shares the pool with his buds.
Arnie rode very well sitting calmly on the backseat of a car on his way to Madrid. On the way home he was pretty pooped so he slept with his head resting on the other dog that rode up with him. Arnie should do well if you have children 8 or over. Come to our Eastside shelter and meet this little cutie pie. He is very popular with our volunteers so we would love to make introductions.
Armando (ID# A 1716413) is a 1 year & 2 month old, male tan & black Smooth Coated Chihuahua mix. Armando looks like a mini-Belgian malinois that weighs only 7 pounds. It gives me chills to think about how this little guy got lost but Armando came to us a scared little stray and was put into our Shy Dog Program. Although he can still be shy initially and more some with some men but this brave boy has learned to trust and now does a little dance at his kennel door when someone approaches. He walks well on leash and enjoys taking daily walks. He loves “lap time” relaxing for loving and will shower you with kisses. Armando attends our little dog play groups and has a grand time. He is quite the ladies man and has captured the hearts of most of our female volunteers. He presently has a kennel mate and has also shared his kennel with a variety of other small dogs. Armando attended the 4th of July parade in Madrid with me. He politely went into his crate and was calm and quiet the whole ride up. He greeted his fellow AWD dogs nicely even though he was the smallest. He handled the crowd quite well but preferred to have a higher view so I carried him. I think he felt at bit more secure among all the people and loud noises. Armando was just as quiet and calm on his return trip to Albuquerque and we heard he crashed in his little bed that evening at the shelter. Armando loves to rest in someone’s arms rolling over for a belly rub usually falling asleep. Sometimes he prefers not to share “his person” if someone else approaches this is one reason we think Armando would do best in a home with older children. Please remember these little guys need to have mom and dad teach their children how fragile they can be and should not be left unattended. We see too many little dogs come in hurt by children and then they become fearful of them which should not be a surprise to anyone. Armando would be perfectly happy in a mature home where he could be showered with attention and be your little shadow all day long and curl up and snuggle for bedtime. This little guy is happily waiting to meet you at our Eastside shelter. If he is a bit shy give him a few moments to get to know you in a quiet area.
We have a creative fun way for our pet loving community to help our shelter pets.
Join us for our Virtual Kitten and Puppy Shower
Help hundreds of kittens and puppies with needed items
Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department has already received hundreds of orphaned kittens and puppies and is expecting many more throughout the summer season. With new arrivals coming in every day to the shelter, we are in need of certain items to help take care of these bundles of joy. The city shelter is hosting a virtual kitten and puppy shower during the month of July.
You can help save these fragile lives by donating items listed on our furbaby registry which you can review at Amazon.com: Go to wish list on amazon.com and type in Albuquerque Animal Welfare.
Donations will be accepted July 1 through July 31. Members of the public can drop off their donations at any of our Animal Welfare Department shelters. For a listing of other locations, go to www.cabq.gov/pets.
Animal Welfare is always looking for foster parents to provide temporary homes for special-needs animals. If you are interested in helping, please contact Bet Lotosky at [email protected]. Fostering is a rewarding experience, knowing you’re helping to save precious lives.
Thank you for being a hero to all the homeless pets at Animal Welfare Department shelters.
