Comedian Dave Chappelle made a rare appearance in New Mexico this week and it could be his last for awhile. On stage Chappelle was hit by a banana peel by a heckler in the audience. Chappellle says he will press charges, now who goes to a stand-up comedy show with a banana peel in their pocket, I know, someone who planned to do this all along. The wildly popular Chappelle stopped doing his highly rated Comedy Central show years ago and turned down a 50 Million dollar contract to continue to do it, mainly he cited because of the racial overtones of his show that he felt some people were laughing at him instead of with him. On the show Chappelle capitalized on racial stereotypes for humor that caught the ire of black celebrities like Oprah and Sidney Poitier. Whatever the reason Chappelle stopped production on his show and left the business before returning to stand-up comedy a couple of years ago. The banana peel is an unfortunate situation where Chappelle found himself in another racial circumstance this time not of his doing but someone else’s bad judgement and poor attempt to make some sort of statement. Let’s hope Chappelle continues to do his comedy and not let folks with the intentions to humiliate him force him into another retirement.
